A compendium of digital initiatives by Tribune Company ex pats

TRIBUNE HISTORY
  • I like to think of myself as a three-time-loser with the Tribune Co. In 1993 I was recruited from Dow Jones & Co. to manage operations in Precision Home Delivery. PHD was creating a Total Market Coverage (TMC) product called ChicagolandExpress. Along the way I assisted with the launch of !Exito! and managed the distribution of outside publications such as Windy City Sports, Today's Chicago Woman, Chicago Parent and Crain's Chicago Business. All of these were distributed by the PHD unit. The unit was closed when the TMC product was mailed by the TribDirect unit (Local Values) and I was laid off in 1996. I picked up most of the outside publications, starting my own distribution business. To increase revenues I also worked as a Tribune agent in Evanston. In 1999 the Chicago Sun-Times selected my company to distribute it in Streeterville. And, coincidentally, the Tribune circulation department terminated their contract with us. (Working for both was a no-no).

About a year later I assisted the Sun-Times in taking over the Miller News Agency, which was located in the basement of the Tower. From there I developed relationships with many people at the Tribune Tower, becoming a go-to person for out of town papers and very early or very special deliveries. In 2005 I foresaw a weakening in the advertising market. In addition, a new business proposal that would have substantially increased the size of the business was called off by our company. I decided to fold the company. I returned to the Tribune Circulation department later that year. I was put into operations in the Transport office of Freedom Center, eventually taking over circulation operations and sales in Michigan, Indiana and "out of market." I also managed the distribution of the product through independent truckers to areas throughout the Midwest. We reorganized most of our contracts through my efforts and saved the company more than $1.3 M annually. But, they closed that area, distributed the ops among circulation and shortly after laid me off in August 2008.

  • SITE DESCRIPTION
  • Sit Down and Shut Up was started in 2005 to cover the Chicago Wolves. The ChiTownDailyNews asked to host it in 2006. In 2007 it became a team blog and added the Rockford IceHogs to its coverage. In 2009 it has added the Chicago Blackhawks. It has always taken the view of the fan in the stands. During off-season it follows other sports. This year it covered the Chicago Force Women's all contact football team, which was ranked #2 last year in its league. And, this year it covered the Girls (yes, they want to be called girls) Flat Track Roller Derby league, the Windy City Rollers. The WCR All-Stars were ranked #2 nationally.
